Myself and 2 friends took our hardier kids (all scouts, cubs and guides) to Rough Close for an over night camp. Our favourite spot (pocket site 7) was our venue and having dodged the Friday traffic and intermittent thunderstorms we arrived at 17:00. After we pitched our shelters and tents before a little axe work, and wood I'd brought from home, we had a lovely fire going to sit and chat while the kids explored the woods in the dark. After a chilly and uneventful night we woke early to the sound of the younger children talking and wood peckers hammering the trees. A fry up and porridge saw us through packing up and clearing the signs of the fire before setting off home to the inevitable kit check, dry and clean.
Anyway here's a few pictures, including the new trailstar in the trees.

Cheers

They certainly did John. 3 had been before, for 2 it was there first time, they all loved the freedom to roam, within reason and they all enjoyed the camp fire stories even the scary ones. I do come back wishing I'd spent longer there and feeling more relaxed for having been there to. It's good to let them use sharps without having to feel paranoid about onlookers and to just help them get back to nature! Can't wait to get out again.

Sounds like a great night out for everyone, thanks for sharing it with us

How did you get one with the early morning rook call that RC's renowned for? :)

Brilliant, it's great that people like you can give the kids that freedom to be children and not wrapping them up in cotton wool!! It's a sad world we live in when kids aren't trusted with Swiss Army Knives anymore...well done! :) great area!

Keep Calm and Camp Out!

I think the rooks were out done by the kids chatting and the woodpeckers giving it to the trees! I do think kids should be kids, but I wouldn't let them loose with the axe not just yet, some are still a little clumsy and clumsy+excited+axe=accident waiting to happen. They love there SAK's though and spent ages whittling sticks and making tent pegs, plus exploring the woods in the dark and pretending to get lost, happy times.

Rough close is great, the kids have fun and explore safely, they can use SAK's without fear of being hounded by the authorities and best of all a camp fire is positively encouraged (I often bring the wood from home though).
Matt the open pitch is superb, it feels even more roomy and is great for cooking under shelter, I've not tried it on the hills yet but later this summer I'll give it ago.

Yeah tried it once but not for me, I suspect it'd be good for 2 in a sheltered location as you mentioned above. Good to see the TS getting some use :)
