I have acquired a piece of cloth a light cotton similar to boiler suit fabric and have thought it would be good to make a pack or at least a practice piece are there any patterns available for packs?

Try an envelope style pack. No real need for a pattern - just cut to size, hem, fold and sew the sides together. I'd attach the straps before sewing. Add a lid when it's all together (my version here).

I spent 20 years moonlighting in theatrical stagecraft.
Lots of really strange costume things and set parts.

My common practice was to build full scale models with cardboard and a hot glue gun.
Rip it apart, cut parts off, slap a patch on here or there = get it right.
Then pull it apart as templates: foam rubber, aluminum sheet, blanket, whatever I was expected to use.

I made this by copying an old rucksack I already had, it's made from a canvas tent and upholstery leather.
I just measured and guessed each panel.
