On a roll with wood carving

I finished this little piece yesterday, thought you may like a look. It's a carving of a leaf from a Red Oak tree, i think they are so elegent. I've under-cut the wood so that the leaf looks like it is floating and ive only coated the leaf with linseed not the background. The wood ive usde is also Oak.

That's really nice.
I think a couple of small carved acorns on the corners of the backboard would be finish it off nicely.

That leaf is just amazing, the way it leaps out. It's inspired me to try something similar, although I've never really tried much more than the odd (...very odd) wood spirit before.
What's alder like to carve?
