This post is a thanks to BCUK forum really. About a year ago badgeringtim posted asking about a brand for marking wood and leather and just mentioned in passing a Viking boat project he was involved with. http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59891&highlight=oseberg

Not just any Viking boat, they are building a replica of the Oseberg ship the most complete and iconic ship surviving. I visited the original at the Viking boat museum in 2004

Well nearly a year after that first post by Tim I have just booked my flight to go and visit the site. This is for me has to be one of the most interesting woodworking projects in Europe at the moment so to get a chance to hew a few timbers that will go into the ship is a very special experience.

few more details on my blog here http://greenwood-carving.blogspot.com/2011/11/off-to-build-viking-longboat.html

and the Oseberg site here http://www.osebergvikingskip.no/eng/index.php

That’s a stunning ship I’ve wanted to go to the Viking ship museum Oslo to see Gokstad and the Oseberg for a couple of years now I am so jealous that must be the best project ever..... How about the Vasa next.

Can not wait to see the finished ship. I love wooden ships and do not forget to make a good strong wooden shield as there as lots of undefended monastery's all along the English coast.

The Viking ship museum is well worth a visit and can be done on the cheap. When I first went we stayed in a huge family room in the youth hostel for about £25 a night for 4. The ethnographic museum and historical museum are great too (lots of viking swords etc) I visited Vasa in 2003 too and had a behind the scenes tour of the reserve collection. The ship is incredible but the artifact collection not as impressive as the Mary Rose. The youth hostels in Stockholm are great too, one on a tall ship moored in the harbour and the other in a prison.
