After reading @Brandon-C thread when I was mid carving a spoon I was inspired to have a go at carving a spiral into my handle, once I started I realised I was able to start another starting on the other side twisting them together up the handle, just needs some oil

Thanks folks it was a lot of fun and new learning in the making, the great thing about spoon carving which a lot of people take for granted is that it is an excellent way to hone a whole array of intricate carving skills that can be applied to any manner of wood working, the combination of the handle shaping when following or going against the grain, then you have the concave and convex shapes of the inside and outside of the bowl going with and against the grain, these skills can be applied to carving anything.

I have decided not so scrimshaw this as i want to leave it a tooled finish so my knife marks can be seen and to get the most from kolrossing or scrimshaw you really do need to sand smooth your surface to be detailed

I just finished applying the third coat of my homemade beeswax and oil mix, the ash is drinking it in so i'll probably apply it a few more times before putting it into regular use

In these pictures is the oiled and waxed spoon in my box of ash shavings (i've made more than this from this piece of ash) and the 4 tools i used to make it, my Mora 106, my Mark Hill Crow, my Wilder Forge blade and my vintage Marples gouge

i'd recommend starting with a spoon handle as it will teach you all you need to learn to do it, tricky at first.

This is what I would like to muster up the fortitude for to make a walking stick look like.

Find yourself a bit of woodland with Honeysuckle winding itself up the trees and cut yourself a 'twister', lovely-looking sticks and much stronger than those carved with a spiral. You can easily weaken your stick when carving spirals so as GGTBod says, do a few on something small first.

It'd be nice to see the results of your efforts :)

Made a few plain spoons, but this is nice work.

I like the beeswax and oil treatment to. Seems to do the job. After a few coats..
