I like the idea of using two scales - one for a more detailed view of things, the other more general. In winter, when the landscape can be obscured by snow, I tend to use 1:50,000 as most of the detail offered by the 1:25,000 is lost beneath the drifts. A friend who is a mountain guide told me about this and, initially, I was sceptical; however, he soon proved the truth of his assertion on a two-day January outing. All useful stuff!

Don't you get plastic film laminated hiking maps in Britain?

Ortlieb map cases are good but become blind by aging.

Toppits ziplock freezer bags 1 or 3 litres could be an option.

Did notice the other day USMCPRO stock all the Magul DAKA pouches, including their document pouch (13"x12") and the small (6"x9") & medium (7"x12") windowed pouches.
