Making alcohol as a survival technique?

Well, I've heard tell that there used to be a bloke at my allotment site who always had 3/4 of his plot down to potatoes and the rest to barley, and kept a pot still in his shed... I'm sure such things still go on somewhere. Horribly illegal, of course... ;)

You know I thought that too, well dual purpose as it were. I have done a lot of home brewing but never owned a still, have known a few folk that have though and tasted the product.

Where on the list of survival priorities does making beer come? Is it top 5, top 10 or what I wonder. I can see a survival application is you already had beer or alcohol, but not for making it from scratch in a survival situation.

Just my view fallas.
