I thought this an interesting article, but I think I might have done it differently.

would it be cheaper to make your own system?

Hydroponics is a lot easier than Aquaponics. Unless you have a greenhouse or if living in the city an outdoor space I can't see it as much of a productive system but would be novel and interesting as a project.

I believe Ikea are soon to release a 600 mm unit that is an off the shelf Hydroponics system.
