Hunting & Trapping guidelines for BCUK.
It has become necessary for us to publish a set of guidelines to govern the posting of threads that are based around “Hunting” or any other form of “Taking Prey” in the form of live wild animals.

BushcraftUK is a UK based forum and we are governed by UK Laws, posts from outside the UK should conform to laws pertaining to that country and also state that fact in the Original post.

BushcraftUK is not responsible for ensuring the legality of your posts, you are! The posting of illegal activities on BCUK is likely to result a ban and possibly your details being passed on to various authorities.

BushcraftUK is an open forum for the entire world to view and as such we need to be aware that any dubious practices (and any discussion that surrounds them) are available to the public in general, anti-hunt protesters, wildlife crimes officers, gamekeepers, as well as other forum members who may not hold the same views as you.

Threads and posts may be made with the following considerations in mind:-

Prey species – members are reminded that while some species are regarded as vermin or pest, due consideration should be given to mentioning or photos of any species not expressly regarded as such, also that it is highly illegal to own any animal or part thereof of certain species (eg. Badger).

Methods of taking – currently including, but not restricted to; firearms (including air-rifle, [inc gas powered] and shotguns), bows, sling, sling-shot (catapult), sling-bow, spear, thrown sticks & stones, traps, snares etc – are all possible topics that can be included for discussion; however if a method can be viewed as poaching, primitive or otherwise unorthodox – it must not under any circumstance be in the context of actually being used; though may be discussed under the merits of historical or theoretical knowledge. Members are required to uphold any law pertaining to “methods” of taking.

Dispatch – When posting about methods of dispatch, members should be aware of the need to dispatch their prey in the most humane manner possible at the time. Cruelty or disrespectful activities of any form will not be tolerated.

Permission – the taking of any prey without permission from the landowner is illegal no matter what the situation. Therefore any thread on hunting topics where the member cannot demonstrate that hunting permission is/was granted is likely to attract swift and robust moderation.

Legality – the laws covering whether any method/species/activity is legal or not are spread far and wide. Members, when requested, should provide links to relevant and reputable websites to show that their topic is permissible or prohibited as applicable. When such proof is not available, the topic should be viewed as “Unproven Information Only” value.

Photographs - should be suitable for the “Fair Game” subsection of “Lovely Grub” area. In general photos of dead prey are allowed provided they carry a warning on the thread heading that such content is on display. Photos should not be overly gory or demonstrate anything that could be interpreted as “Disrespectful Behaviour”.

Tastefulness – topics under discussion (and any photographs therein) will be viewed with regards to being in good taste. Threads that do not meet the forum standards of taste, decency, validity, legality, etc, will be removed and further action may result depending upon the topic, activity or other situation.

Controversial topics – in adhering to the current law, anyone posting about illegal or questionable activities is open to being reported to the relevant authorities for further investigation of any possible criminal activity.

Responsibilities – As in other areas of Bushcrafting, members are required to assume full responsibility for their actions.

General – This discussion area is ripe for confrontation, members are asked to think very carefully before posting threads or replies which might not be accepted in the manner in which they were intended and at all times to demonstrate respect for any life taken. Similarly, for those who hold strong beliefs about the treatment of animals as a resource, are politely asked not to visit this area at the risk of becoming enraged to the point where confrontation is likely to ensue.
