How do you start a fire in the wet?

Hello All,

As per the title really.

I was out with some friends and family on Sunday and we got a fire going with a lighter and feather sticks etc and set it up so it was fairly well sheltered from the rain by the tarp but how else could we have got this going and could we have positioned the fire better (it really was pooring with rain)?

Im sure we could have used cotton wool / paper or pre selected tinder etc but we didnt have any so I tried really fine shavings on the feather sticks (which has worked for me before when it been a nice hot day) but just couldnt get it to catch with my fire steel.

Any tips would be appreciated.
