No, @Herman30 , everybody can do in the woods what he likes to of course.

There are good reasons for every existing piece of equipment, even if not everybody needs the stuff always and everywhere.

I just want to avoid that we produce here threads about equipment that is unusual and often not necessary and we get here exclusively positive comments with the result that beginners who read it could assume that they need the stuff.

If you want to go for hiking with a war elephant, just do it. I probably even would ask you to come with you for a week if he is a nice guy. But in the thread that discusses if pack animals are a good idea I will point out that I don't use them.

That's the point, nothing more.

MountainKing brand is my serious recommendation. They're as good as the big brands like leki, Black diamond, etc but they're cheaper, better value, British made and highly regarded by outdoor magazines that aren't about selling the latest version of kit that's the latest fashion on behalf of their advertising customers.

On the clay/grass hills around here a good stick is a necessity - hazel, ash, thorn - my current favourite is made from yew root :)

If you're using a walking pole, or even worse, two walking poles, you're assumed to be a towny tourist
It is my design to at some point cut myself a woody pole, to know I will have to season it for it to not be ready for at least a year and I am being particular over what wood I want for said pole to be on the look out for the ideal contender, a particular wood in fact. To in that recognise given the need for walking support is now, the man made had to be the route to take to find an unintended other use for the two poles supplied through the activity of Nordic walking; the cardiovascular exercise of which is not something I envisage with a singular woody pole cut for a related but different purpose. Where it is I live in these isles, I wake to or rather am woken by the cow chorus, for the roads I pound along to be high hedged country roads.

Beware of others assumptions for quite often they're fact free and laced with prejudice of which may even serve to limit choice through the negative connotation assumptions about groups of people often contain

Hiking sticks here appear to be of most use for protecting your sense of balance,
trying to walk downhill with a heavy pack. The material of choice is diamond willow. Properly finished, these sticks have spectacular twists of grain and wood colors. Lee Valley sells a variety of finishing materials such as brass and steel spear points, etc.
Diamond willow is a figured wood which goes from cheese to bone when it dries. As my sense of balance has never recovered from a mild(?) concussion, I walk with a variety of diamond willow canes. I have loaded them to 70lbs/32kg and do not see the shafts even flex.

I have a very very light Fizan aluminium pole surplus to requirements at the moment as I’ve upgraded to a pair.
Drop me a message for more details.
