Being Canadian and a collector of Grohmann Knives, I have to agree with the other posters...You may want to look at the Survival Knife with its 5½" blade...The Original style has now been copied by both BRKT and Cold Steel...

Going for a reasonably priced custom knife of D2 steel and my favourite maker is Bob Dozier with either his KS-3 Pro Guides Knife or his KS-7 Wilderness Knife which are both in the 5" range and he'll gladly add that extra little bit on for you...another, that I don't have one of yet is the KS-4 Elk Hunter that would fit your needs quite well...His prices are about $225 to $255 including a side mounted (horizontal) or traditional hanging sheath of Kydex...

ok... so after some time on google I now know what you are talking about, I find the words gutting and cleaning a little more common on this side of the world... lol

At home when I'm out shooting for the table we use maybe 3 knives, a frosts mora, a Frosts Gutting Knife & a simple box cutter knife, the mora is for bleeding, the gutter is for... well gutting and the box cutter is for hide removal...

this is what I use for the job... or one very similar to it... & its designed for the job...

I've found something I think is what I'm looking for - although of course I won't know until I get it in my hands and try it out... :)

I looked at Marttiini knives - the sheath style is exactly what I was looking for, and the slimline condor skinner was close...

Then I found Nieto knives... :)

They have a great range - some nice looking skinning knives like these: http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/nieto_sheath_knives_hk1011_2/

and also what looks like what I'm looking for: http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/nieto_sheath_knives_hk8904_8_hk8950/
The HK8908 is what I'll get to try.

I may also be persuaded to get a skinner... :)

However they also do a cheaper, rubber handled 'hunter' : http://www.mkcamping.co.uk/products/NIETO-HK2193-HUNTING-KNIFE.html
Which looks very interesting, from a pure functionality perspective - altough I really do prefer the wooden handles and look of the other Nieto's... :)

I'm away on business again for a couple of weeks, so I'l put in my order the week I'm due back, so that I'll be home when it gets here, and can ty it out asap...

Will let you know how it goes...

Thanks to all for the various suggestions!

Well, some of the knives you narrowed it down to are not drop points nor do they have 5" blades. Out of curiosity, why the 5" blade stipulation?

If gutting is the main function, you might consider a Swiss Army Knife, with a curved serrated gutting blade. I have a friend who has used his on at least a dozen deer. Works like a charm. Clean up is easy, just throw the knife in soapy water.

I would say:
1) Marttiini Condor skinner broad blade (have been working nicely for me around 6 years as all purpose outdoor knife)
2) EnZo trapper or if you want longer blade Camper model 125mm D2 micarta handles. D2 won´t rust very easily and in scandi grind it´s very sharp and useable blade. I have Trapper D2 with birch burl handle.

Marttiini was pretty expensive in outdoorgb in Finland that´s about 40 EUR.
