Just found a good source for excellent quality throwing spikes, perfectly machined with a good weight, £6 each. Just go to your local B&Q (crowbar/chisel stand)

great idea, I used to use brick layers line pins, just sit the hammer tops, sharpen or point and perfect budget throwing knives

Edit - cut off the hammer flat tops...
