Hi all,

Looking towards christmas pressie time.

After reading the article in the latest Bushcraft magazine regarding "a platter to flatter" i would like to try my hand at some rectangular bowl type plates. Achieving the flat blank of wood is ok, but then i need to carve the bowl. Article author uses a gouge (does Kevin Warrington appear on hear) with baton for roughing and in hand for finishing. My questions are do i need a straight or curved gouge? Does anyone have an opinion on Ashley Iles gouges and whats the difference between all these http://www.asktools.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d252.html sizes. i would probably choose a 14 x 1" curved if i had to plump for one. What do others use?

The difference between a curved or straight gouge is how deep you can cut close into the rim of the carving without the neck of the gouge getting in the way.

So it depends on the style of carving you want to do.
