Yep, we've sat around the fire bowl for the last few nights :) Around here, everything goes absolutely silent for an hour or so after it gets dark - I just love that time when you can hear your own heartbeat :)

I'm afraid I cheated lighting my fire... good old sheet of newspaper and a match!
I promise I will try flint and steel as soon as I have some suitable tinder :)

To be honest, as a youngster I was given one sheet of newspaper.. that is , not a double page bit.. just a single page and one single match for lighting a fire in my garden.(I'd be about nine years old) and I learned to light fires that way.I had a marvel tin Billy can and a coathanger fork. I'd make tea or cocoa and toast maybe beans and sausages.
It taught me to make sure I had the right wood or no amount of newspaper or matches would be of any use.
It was a game but taught me a skill.

I grew up on a farm, and got very experienced at lighting fires, in all the different ways possible, I got quite well known for being able to light bonfires with a single match and nothing else apart from the wood to be burnt in my youth.

So completely agree that very important skills to learn....the only technique I have not mastered is the dreaded hand drill, that can be painful....

My bow drill is gathering dust. I just can't use it any more. Flint and steel is my preferred method now. It's much easier :)
