Fungus ident please.

I found this fungus on the banks of Loch Maree. Never seen anything like it in the UK before.

Well......I know what it looks like......but this is a family forum so I won't say! Lol

Might be one of the skinkhorns. I found a green one yesterday.

It has gills. It has gone a bit wierd. My guess is scarlet waxcap. They mangle upwards with age.

I think it might be a milkcap.

Thanks for the comments so far. It was in a mixed woods, mainly pine/birch, quite wet too. Quite a few flies on it but didn't smell strong. Size about 15-20cm long by 10cm across if that helps.

at that size i think it may be a 'Crimson Waxcap'.

Well, they are certainly one of the large waxcaps. Might be punicea. Might also be splendidissima.

Thanks Geoff. Guessing the state of decay makes an definite ident very tricky. Looking at the Crimson Waxcaps pic again, the gills are uniform colour which doesn't match.

Another couple of votes for waxcap here too mate, neither Gemma nor I have the faintest idea which one though.

Identifying waxcaps isn't easy when they are in their prime either, let alone decayed.
