first carving of 2022

I would like to share with you my first post of 2022, It is a Woodspirit carved from an ancient piece of Yew, This is secured upon a base of Holly, with two tealights inset to give a soft warm glow, this also reveals the lovely red hues of the carving, overall height 14".

I've done some wood carvings. Are these wood spirits always supposed to look like they have been sucking on lemons? I think of the forests and fields as happy places.

Over here in the UK and throughout Europe,this is indeed the traditional demeanour as passed down through the centuries.

A short search gave very few smiling ones, true. Out of curiosity any idea how old the tradition of carved wood spirits is?

Pre history would be my guess, tales of the greenman, woodwose, and woodspirits etc were originally told around the camp fire, and apparently still are by some indigenous tribes of the world.
