The Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE has digitized quite interesting films from its collections for us to see. The first two I would like to you to use are a 1966 short documentary on Kala-Eemeli ("Fish-Emil" - b. 1905 d. 1966) who lives in the wilderness of Posio in Southern Lapland with his dog, Musti ("Blackie"). During much of the film he describes the nature and why he decided to be a hermit. The last few minutes illustrate his house he build between two small ponds.

The second one is a bit longer story of Surnu-Pekka who inhabits the wilderness of Vätsäri, the most remote place in Finland situated in upper Lapland. It could be that one or both of the films cannot be watched outside Finland. Please let me know if this is the case. However both films were shot by YLE so there should not be a copyright problem in these cases.

I just wish I could understand.

While learning Finnish you can watch this early tourism advertisement with English commentary from 1938. The timing is interesting as although the film was probably shot few years earlier, it still shows the lasts years before the War when these people were still semi-nomadic. After the War almost all of the people lost their living & land and moved to log cabins and such. The film also shows very interesting period ski clothing which fascinates me much. You can also see a veshmeshok type of a traditional Finnish bag on a woman at 03:23!

Here on the other hand is again another one with Finnish commentary, but this time on Lapponian Herder and their use in reindeer herding. Based on your avatar I thought you might be interested on dogs. It either one of the topics interests you, I really must recommend this film to you. The second, third film and fourth on Sámi people were shot few years earlier.

The hunting video show early Suunto compasses. What gems

Suunto M-311 compass is still being manufactured as M-801. The only differences between the 1936 model and the 2006 model are different looking dials and texts "SUUNTO" and "FINLAND" added to the latter model.

There is even model for the Finnish Army made of green plastic instead of aluminium (I have one of those :))

Here is another excellent film, albeit a long one. Finnish championship in "wilderness hiking" is held every year in Lapland. This was filmed during the 2008 championships during which competitors hiked over 120 kilometers and they had to resolve multiple different tasks (e.g. shooting with a makeshift hand bow) on the field of bushcrafting. There is not much talking after first few minutes, so I will hope you will get the hang of it.

A short film showing how to cut down a tree safely using an axe or a bucksaw. The diagram on 1:01 shows how large should the felling notch be and how far you should be standing from the tree. The film starts with old technique on how to use a bucksaw (from 1:26-) but it is advised to use the newer technique which is better for your feet. This is illustrated from 02:10 onwards.
