What about a bit of hawthorn? Stunning colours and some interesting
grain usually. Plus there is lots of it around if you ask farmers they have
a pile somewhere waiting to be burned. Or you could ring some tree surgeons
and see if they have got anything unusual lying around.

The colours in yew wood usually meet with approval, and cherry has a nice glow to it.

For special stuff I use purpleheart, but it is very hard indeed. My wife likes it though, and we sort of have an annual tradition with it now.
