Buy a gypsy caravan and a horse, get good at whittling spoons? Worse comes to worst you'll still have a home & a fire, but no bills and will regularly need to move about. Using the loo becomes a lot less pleasant...

For such a short period, I'd suggest you take turns going off exploring with the kids. If you take all your annual leave separately (might be easier out of season) you can cobble together a much longer time span, but still keep your jobs. If your partner wants to quit her job than that might make it easier. But unless you have a solid plan to go away, you could achieve the same thing at home or near home without risking everything.

You do not need to lose the kids to the system, you can home school

which means you can go where you like

I have just moved back home from Cornwall to my house. 50 banana boxes.

(Not including larger artefacts)

I am insane.

But I need textbooks.
