Been having a play with the thread injector ready for when all the kit turns up for my down underquilt project.

Decided to try and design a russian style down hat.
I had to learn how to do darts and also realised I had made a few big mistakes but this is only a prototype.

Biggest mistake was thinking that I would need a larger outer layer to provide space for the down to loft.
After spending the day swearing at darts and picking out stitching I realised the mistake.
Never mind I learned a few new tricks whilst trying.

Due to the mistake i will be recutting more material tomorrow and trying it with no extra allowance for the outer shell.
Just hope it allows room for the down.

Been a busy day and a school day.
Learned a lot whilst making up a couple more hats.
Solved the inner and outer sizing problem by running a bigger seam in the inners.

I bought 500g of the finest polish goose down from Extrimtextil.de.
400g for my Underquilt leave me with 100g of downy goodness to play with.
Im thinking if i can knock a few of these down hat out on Ebay for less than the price you get them from the US i may be able to make my money back on the quilt materials.
Im going to try a beanie hat design in the next few days and them maybe some mittens too.

Well......after all the designing, cutting and sewing........its just not going to work.
Im having to change the design again because if i sew baffles through these once the down is in them, its going to leave a horrible dart on the outside of the fabric due to the size difference in the inner/outer.
SO, im going with a beanie design as the main hat and then a shorter beanie with a set of drop down ear flaps so there will be a choice of 2 types of hat.
Will post some pics up later once i have made the new pattern and cut some material.

Could be done i suppose but the extra cutting sewing and weigh, it just would not be worth it.
The beanies have been designed after 3 attempts and failures. So far im on Down Hat MK7 but i think i have it cracked.
The new design is working well and even added a fleece headband for the inside.
Just need to buy a cheap hoover so i can start playing with the down.

I know these dont look like much yet but they are only prototypes and most have been unpicked and resown a few time to try new things.
