Boot Sale Axe Head

Hi Guys

I has at the boot sale and picked up a few things last Sunday. One of which was this axe head that I have now cleaned up a bit.

So the makers mark is not very clear but I'm pretty sure that its the S J and crown above of Spear & Jackson. Does anybody have an idea of when this may have been made? Also now I consider spear and jackson to be a bit rubbish these days but was this produced when they were a more quality producer? The steel seams OK, maybe a little on the softer side but seams to take a decent edge.

I'm going to try to handle it up with a 30 inch handle but I'm strugglig to find some where with a bucket of handles I can look at close by.

Spear and Jackson used to make some very high quality tools.

I'm still using some saws and planes that are at least 40 years old.

Thats what I thought, but did they make this head before or after they went bad?
