I'm making a knife from an old file, it's about 3-4 mm thick. I'm happy (ish) with the shape but i am struggling a little with the bevel. Could someone please tell me how far back does the grind go.......i think it's about 8mm is that right ?

By back do you mean how high up the blade?

If so then 8mm high in 4mm steel will give you a grind angle of just under 29degrees. Thats very thick imo.

I'd be aiming at a grind height of 10 to 11 mm. Which will give you a grind agle of around 22 degrees. Plenty strong enough, and will cut a lot better. :)

depends on what bevel profile you're after

If you are looking far a scandi grind the bevel needs to be about 22 degrees total so you'll end up with something along the lines of 8mm bevels on a 3mm blade or 10mm bevel with 4mm steel. I however use a sightly tighter angle so my bevels are about 15mm
