When I take the dogs out in the night 10 -12 for their toilet before bed time I hear in the woods an unusual sound.
The sound is like a high pitch hammer drill and it goes on for a long time and then changes pitch.
Any one have ideas what bird it can be?
Thanks
Mick

Maybe common grasshopper warbler (Locustella naevia), or one of the close relatives. Also a very unbirdy sound. Though I like nightjar better.

is the nightjar the same as the eurasion nightjar .?
My bird book only lists nightjar and it has a disk with bird songs and calls so it is a nightjar not a grasshopperwarbler
