We have a spooncarving course next weekend and they always inspire a little flurry of crafty activity before and after. So this morning I peeled the bark from a birch log, first time I have done any of this kind of work and made a little box. I copied one sent to me by a German friend, made in Lithuania I believe. Mine is not as nice as the original, I didn't do the spruce root stitching around the top but I was very pleased with the little interlocking joints, simple but they work.

Whilst I was doing that Nicola finished off a nice sycamore spoon made from a sycamore crook.

You may be able to see the state of the Peak District weather in the background, it was a day to be indoors.

Was the birk freshly cut? When I've tried to peel it its been from out the fire log pile and they are usually partially dry
Also how does the joints work?
