Okay, I work at a hardware store. Yesterday, I went through one of our ordering catalogues and came across a Bahco folding saw.

It was titled a Bahco "Sandvik", but from the image, it was similar to a Laplander. Two questions.

a) Is this in any way similar to a Laplander, or is "Sandvik" code for "Laplander"?

b) If it's not, is it still an effective saw?

Inquiring minds want to know ;)

I think Bacho sell a saw exactly the same and the Laplander just with a different badge on it (same company perhaps..??) But I don't know what the Sandvik bit is about.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it Bahco own the "Sandvic" label. I'm willing to wager that your Bahco Sandvic is every bit as good a tool as a Laplander ;)

Bacho and Sanvik are the same company i think. Bacho is owned by Snap on,

so i'm sure you know all about them. Great little saws for the price and i dont go

out without mine.

Pretty sure Sandvik make the blades, and everyone just shoves a handle on with their name & label.

Hi
Bahco and Sandvik are the same company. The only difference between the Laplander 396 and and the Bahco 396xt is

the laplander 396 is green and the blade has a non stick coating

the Bahco 396xt is black with a 2inch section in bright orange, the teeth on the blade are the same but it does not have a non stick coating.

I prefer the Bahco 396xt for the simple reason if I have dropped or placed my saw on the ground it is easier to find because of the orange part of the saw
If you decide you want a non stick blade Bahco sell 3 different blades for the 396 saws
I hope this helps

As far as I know Bahco bought Sandvik out a few years ago, which is why the most common saw used on building sites has exactly the same blue handle with the fish and hook emblem but now says Bahco on it instead of Sandvik.

As far as I remember Bahco have been making quality adjustable spanners (if theres such a thing as a decent adjustable spanner that is  ) for years now.

Sandvik bought Bahco.
Sandvik Saws & Tools division then renamed to Bahco Tools.
There are other divisions of Sandvik that manufacture specialist steels (eg for cutting) and other stuff. See http://www.sandvik.com/ .

The Bahco Laplander differs from the Bahco folding saw in several ways. Apart from the coating, the Laplander blade is manufactured differently from the folding saw blade. The blade on the Laplander is thinner on the spine than it is on the cutting edge. This is the main reason that it does't jam when cutting thickish wood. The folding saws have a flattish blade suitable for general gardening and pruning. ;)

the Bahco folding pruning saws which include the Laplander are available in several different versions as can be seen in the attached link. I have an orange 396 Bahco that has the same blade as the Laplander although it does not have the nonstick coating. Dependant on what you mainly use the saw for you can find one with a type of blade that will most suit your needs
