www.hoodbooks.com key on rural. THE AXE BOOK: THE LORE AND SCIENCE OF THE WOODCUTTER by D. Cook ISBN 0-911469-16-8 Alan C. Hood & Co. previously published as KEEPING WARM WITH AN AXE Universe Books. I just discovered this text and am ordering a copy ( USD 22.95 + s/h) The book is geared to woodlot management, axe selection and care, producing firewood etc. this is a must have book for anyone with a Wetterling or GB. AXE AND MAN A GUIDE THROUGH HISTORY by Charles A. Heaversin. I just bid on this on EBAY. It is newly published and sounds like a well put together study from stone to modern steel.

Dudley's book is great for the stories - but when a person comes to the detailed stuff, then they'll need some experience to know just what he's talking about. THE book to start with is online as huge pdf files (acrobat) "An Ax to Grind" by Bernie Weisgerber:
An Ax to Grind
It's part way down the page.
A super book on early days of hand logging is Bus Griffith's "Now You're Logging" which is an incredibly detailed book in comic book format - with a good story line. It's now out again in paper covers, but is hard to find. It's a great book just for the story and artwork, but every point is explained. So a person will never confuse a swamping axe with a falling axe again...
