just been looking at a thread by jon r about building his canoe ( verry good)
and saw some pics of birch bark beeing striped does this have any lasting effect on the tree in the same way as harvesting the sap ( if you leave the plug out )
Is there a % ammount you should aim for beeing below?????

Removing the outer bark of the birch does not harm it directly and tree will carry on living as long as the corky inner bark is left intact. Removing the outer bark does leave the tree more open to fungal infection though. Theres been alot of discussion on removing birch bark before, do a search for birch bark and it should turn up previous discussions about removing and using the stuff.

many thanks bite size info like this is of great help it,s like the open university for bushcraft!!!!!
Nice to know that there are people out there who keep this info alive and evolving not confined to the pages of some book in the library gathering dust.
