From the BBC:-

"An inventory of Wales' ancient woodlands is to be updated to ensure all sites are protected.

It will be the first time the list has been updated in 30 years and new technology means it will be more accurate. "

That's encouraging :D
If it's known what still exists it can be helped to thrive and not degrade, and that the intention is to record what 'used' to be ancient woodland, with an eye to restoration, is to the good as well :D

cheers,
Toddy

Sounds great news and a good resource, although i hate to say it, but it will not make a difference to the ongoing small scale (and large scale) chipping away at these very special habitats. It might make it harder to do it but like all environmental protection if its in the 'public interest' they will normally go ahead. Mitigation is good but it isnt the real thing - 'you cant plant a wood' etc.
Ok im stopping before full rant mode,

:)
