try amsteel blue or dyneema cord,it comes in varios thicknesses and does not stretch and is far stronger than 550.

Dyneema is pricey but it is rediculously strong (IE. They make bullet-proof stuff out of it), I found it difficult to find thick Dyneema (IE. 8mm) but in the end I found the stuff. If you decide to go with Dyneema, here's the links:

3mm Dyneema: http://www.roostersailing.com/merch...&Product_Code=ROPD3&Category_Code=dyn&SortBy=

6mm Dyneema: http://www.roostersailing.com/merch...Product_Code=ROPDY6&Category_Code=dyn&SortBy=

8mm Dyneema: http://www.roostersailing.com/merch...Product_Code=ROPDY8&Category_Code=dyn&SortBy=

baler twine - cheao and comes but the mile.

I've also got a load of proper old fashioned jute hairy baler twin. Strong, very weather resistant (I've some that is been out side for 2 years and is still holding things together) plus it can be used as tinder and will rot once on the floor if dropped

I've started including a roll of jute twine in my bag. It's good enough for alot of various tying tasks, is biodegradable, and can be used as tinder in a pinch.

Me too, I bought a 125 metre roll of natural Jute twine for 79p, there's also a 50 metre roll of green for 49p and a 250 metre roll of natural

I like the green jute garden twine too, it can be had very cheaply. I picked up some 4mm plastic stuff in B&Q the other day, about £3 for 50 metres, for those jobs that need a bit of strength, but would be a waste of paracord or climers accessory cord.
Baling string is good too, and tends to be a by-product on dairy farms that just gets binned or burnt, so its even cheaper!
