Apply a first coat of finish. I know that most times, all sorts of wood fiber sticks up.
Let the finish set up good and hard.
Wipe the carving with the XXX coarse steel wool. Bulldog brand is what we get.
The coarse stuff has flat fibers which don't break. Instead, they cut like a million chisels
to skim off the rough wood fiber without taking much of the finish.

Interesting never tried steel wool, I can see this working better on a flatter piece, but mine have lots of nooks and crannies, but I will try it thanks.

Do not use fine steel wool. The fibers are round and they break up easily. Don't.
The extra coarse should be flat. Look in the box before you buy it.

Coincidentally, the coarse steel wool trick was originally meant for curved surfaces. Moldings and carvings as well.
