    What did you buy today?

Hearse duty or are you going for the full Viking and having it drive into the wilderness on fire?

    Hidden Woodsman

I've only bought a selection of embroidered patches, so not exactly on par with spending big on the regular gear, but I will say least say that I found their service to be very good.

From the snapshots over at the Wayback Machine it looks as though the site disappeared late in 2014.

    Trangia Triangle - Value?

Triangles have been going for fairly silly money recently. An eBay search for sold items shows £40+ being common for used examples even without a burner.

Headwear for the in between months?

Nope, genuine suggestion. They're very comfortable and effective.

Headwear for the in between months?

A good quality Basque beret, the type without a headband, is comfortable and very weather resistant. Get a decent size to allow shaping to suit the conditions and pull right down if necessary. A good quality basque, on the other hand, doesn't keep your ears terribly warm.

    Ed Stafford Nomad Bushtool.

At first I thought that Ed Stafford Nomad Bushtool was Ed Stafford's full name, a bit like Ranulph Fiennes being Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes.

    What did you buy today?

Bought a second OneTigris Canteen Pouch, a very adjustable water bottle holder which is pretty much some MOLLE attachments fixed to a gigantic Velcro wrap. I'd been after this model particularly because finding something to fit the Nalgene Oasis canteens I like isn't easy: they're practically...

    Petrol and Diesel Shortages

If you ask me it's just a front for Big Marrow. Anyway, not spotted any obvious fuel shortages in the Leeds area so far.

Berghaus Munro? Sabre 30? Cuillin 2? So many daypacks...

Truly waterproof options are limited and often expensive, the Alpkit Gourdon bags being the exception. I've had one of the smallest size for a few years, mostly used for a long cycle commute, and it's been completely reliable. A 30 - 35 litre bag looks about right, so your current suggestions...

The bottle and mug together are a nice easy fit. There's a little extra room and some slight chance of the odd rattle, but if you have anything in the inside pockets it will fill that space. Photos: the complete Crusader system in the pouch, lid closed to show fit; bottle and metal mug; bottle...

    Favourite bird

An unpopular choice I suspect, but I rather like magpies. Absolute ********, obviously, and they don't exactly have a voice to inspire poets, but they're beautiful, clever and hide a shimmer of magnificent colour. When I lived in Maine it was definitely the loon. They're like a duck that has...

OK, the Crusader 1 kit - cooker stand, metal cup, canteen and plastic mug - will all fit in the Helikon E&E pouch quite comfortably. The inside slip pockets can catch on the metal cup as it slides in, but otherwise it's fine. There's a little space left at the sides to add small items. Obviously...

I have one of those attached to my pack. Just setting up at work right now, but give me an hour and I'll see if I can check whether everything fits in.

    In the news today......

Has anyone tried a Thermacell against midges? (one of these gas-powered devices) They're pricey, but if they work I'll stock up before next heading over the border.

    Persuade me to go light?!

The reason I switched to tarps years ago wasn't so much wanting to go light as wanting to enjoy the camping more. Compromises are required of course (high, exposed plateaus are not the tarp's favourite environment, for example) but there are compromises in everything. Lying in bed looking out at...
