    Kifaru Tipi and stoves

I just got my Kifaru 6 man tipi in the mail this week. I have set the stove up (large) and will likely get the tipi up next week. The whole kit weighs 12 pounds!!! That's nothing in a pulk or toboggan. Can't wait!! Will let you know how it does....

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Dogwood, I cannot seem to write a response that doesn't sound argumentative, which is not my intent here. Your caloric info may be bang on. I am no expert in nutrition. The rest of it is just theory, and it's based on techniques that people up here don't use. No one would hike or hunt for...

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Nope, i think that was the point. Even though clown-fish like me are not convinced... :)

Lake trout. That young feller was 25-ish lbs. The spruce boughs are for sitting around the fire, sewing, etc.

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Guys kill moose now, early fall. The temp is close to 0C all day, and below at night. Preserving meat is not too difficult. In warmer months, smoking in an open framed structure is easy to do, even for one. Cutting slices off a downed animal is work, but far from impossible. They do not hang...

Your most usefull bit of kit??

Ooooo. I want it to be a hammock, but I don't have one yet. Same with the Honey Stove. So for now, it's gotta be the Therma-rest

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

:lmao: I tried it once and the motto holds true. No matter where I tried to hide, I kept finding myself. No worries though. I forgot to read myself my rights, so the judge threw it out. Things are different now, than they were back when the Mad Trapper was caught. I think the new motto is...

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Oops, forgot the fish trap part, my bad. The combo shotgun, rifle is a good idea too. I wasn't trying to suggest a gun calibre really, just that something capable is required. And a .22 is always good. Hoodoo, I prolly shoulda said cheeky, being a British forum... :) And how nice of you to...

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Hmm, just re-read my post. Hope I didn't come off saucy. Certainly not my intent. I just basically mean that sometimes the sum of the parts isn't the same as the whole, cuz on paper, many would have died out in the woods here by starvation if they read this, yet they didn't... :D

Why even Ray Mears dies alone in the subarctic -- part 1

Dogwood, Thanks for the interesting thread. There are a couple things I would like to point out, if you don't mind. I live in the Canadian subarctic, and noticed a few possible over estimates. Calories for hiking - 1500 for a 4 hour hike. This would be close if you were speed hiking or out...

Critters and colours on the Dempster....

MF, to be honest I don't even what "1280 resolution m8" means... :) I think these are full size. I don't recall having to resize them but I'll have a look and see what I have. I know the camera is capable of higher res than the 10240x 768 that most of these are, but don't remember what the...

Critters and colours on the Dempster....

I'm in Deline on Great Bear Lake. Those pics were taken when I lived in Inuvik, up until a year ago.... We love whitehorse, and will likely go there either for my next posting (RCMP) or the one after that.., so either 1 or 4 years.... You have such great access to outdoor activities there...
