    Carving bone

I saw a programme on tv some time ago where they put bones in a solution of biological washing liquid in an oven at aroung 60c for a couple of days - the bones came out stripped clean and ready for use, something to do with the enzymes in the washing liquid. I haven't tried it myself so no idea...

    Kuksa problems

Hiya I've had a couple of goes at making kuksas without much success. I've used the traditional 'bloke' approach - seen a picture of one, thought 'I can do that' and had a go with the kitchen knife and a lump of wood off the wood pile. Stage two is to ask people who know how, so any tips...

Volunteering for a local scout troop

don't forget the 'plus one', that is 1 leader per 6 Beavers, plus 1. So 6 Beavers is a minimun of 2 leaders, 12 is a minimum of 3 leaders and so on. Sorry to be pedantic.... i joined as a Cub Leader 16 years ago - the best thing I ever did, the guy who hooked me said it was only an hour a...

question from a psychologist about children's learning

I take children camping a lot and have been trying, without sucess, to think of a useful example. It got me thinking tho. Some of these unnessessary actions may be derived from ritual. Imagine an ancient hunter who rubs his ear before taking a shot, and gets his prey. He then assumes that...

    hammocking without trees

Yes, I could have but It would have meant another pole to carry. Also, I was tucked away in a corner, so no passers by. My mate and I were looking at a few designs for the set up, using just two poles etc, one had all guys pulling inwards, but we had no spare time to try rigging them. Next...

    hammocking without trees

Thanks - the rope is under a lot of tension and guyed out using three pegs in a line (see inset in the second pic). When i rigged it, i had the poles at more of an angle, then pushed the bottoms out to make them almost verticle and the rope became a lot tighter. It took my weight easily (i'm...

    hammocking without trees

I spent last weekend camping with 200 cubs and scouts in a field that didn't have any suitable trees for my hammock. So, I rigged this up using 4 ash poles, ash pegs and some 6mm nylon rope. It worked a treat and I had 2 great nights sleep! Also generated a lot of interest amongst other leaders...

    Whats the fascination with hammocks?

I love my hammock - i've tried mats, cots and airbeds but none give me a night's sleep like a hammock! I've used it in the pouring rain in the middle of a cold february weekend and over lovely warm nights. Never been cold or got wet. The trick is to insulate well (under and over yourself) then...

    camping with hammocks

Used my hammock and basha this weekend in the pouring rain - my only problem was the noise of the rain - snug as a bug otherwise! I'm away again in 2 weeks camping in an open field. No trees! So i'm taking 4 ash poles and lots of rope with me and rigging my hammock off them. Should be...
