    Beginner Tracking - Tips?

It is soooooo much better than the Diaz book. I ordered the book direct from trackingschool.com. Similar price I'm afraid but I think it is worth getting. Mainly deals with mantracking so if you are only interested in animal tracking its probably not worth it (although a lot of the skills are...

    Beginner Tracking - Tips?

Another good contender for your tracking library should be Foundations for Awareness, Signcutting and Tracking by Robert Speiden.

    show us your tracking sticks

Have you a stick ready for use? If not find and cut a nice hazel stick of about the right size and weight for you - approx 1" thick and at least about 40" long. Then put it away for at least 6 months to dry out! Once dry (seasoned), check for straightness. If it needs straightening try...

    show us your tracking sticks

If you've got a farmers supplies (Countrywide or equivalent) near you they should have some there. A box of 100 costs about £1 - £1.50. http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/mvf/store/products/castration-rings-100-pack

Probably cheaper to buy a box of castration rings yourself than to pay for the postage!

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

As well as photos try casts for examining prints in detail. Sometimes the negative casts can help reveal previously unnotced detail. Noticed it with a cast I took today. The advantage is that you have the print in 3d, you can then make positive prints and can study the print at your leisure.

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

I think we can call this one an "open case with on going enquiries"! Sometimes with tracking the answers remain out of our grasp. Hard to deal with sometimes but makes it better when we do find the answers to other tracking questions. I think of my tracking deductions as temporary until they...

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

Southey, on the right print yes. On the left print there is also another possible on digit 4 closer to the ruler.

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

No worries JD. I personally would still be a bit concerned about labelling this as a feline print but as the guy on the ground you have a lot more detail than that shown so go with your gut / deductions. The problem with photos is nearly always the lack of context. Think of it as trying to...

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

If the animal has long claws that would normally register, possibly. What I'm thinking is if this is an animal that has spent a lot of time on tarmac / hard surfaces the claws may not register, at least not as much as would normally be expected.

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

Not a technical whiz so will have to describe rather than post the pics with descriptions. Go around each toe methodically and look for the marks. Bear in mind that claw marks don’t have to be sharp and clear but can be blunt, faint and hard to spot. Look at the pic showing the two prints...

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

Sometimes we see what we want to see (or not). Look again, they are there. I missed them at first and got all excited but was shown them by my 10 year old son!

    TRACKS: Who dunnit?

Hate to be a party pooper but has nobody else spotted the claw marks that are visible in the original pics?

Bushmoot: Are we allowed to fish in the rivers?

Tony is right about the treatment plant. I'm nearby all year round and it's rare to be able to smell anyything. It's also well screened from view by woodland and so most people don't know it's there. It does show though that it is worth knowing what is upstream of where you are fishing / washing...

Bushmoot: Are we allowed to fish in the rivers?

As far as I am aware the fishing upstream of the sewage works bridge is private. Downstream of this fishing is allowed but not from the Merthyr Mawr Estate side (OK if you're actually standing in the river or from the east bank). Sea fishing is fine.

    Cold weather Boots

I have a pair of the Meidel Solden and found them to be (on the whole) a good pair of boots for a good price. I wore them on a wolf tracking expedition to Poland in February. I always get cold feet during the winter but these boots kept me warm in temps down to -18 even when standing still...
