    Old knife restoration

I bought two old knives, definitely not working ones though both in good condition. I am going to do some basic cleaning but how much? Should I have the blades darkened after cleaning? A kukri and a jambiya.

    "Best" outdoor lighter

In the past I have used the ubiquitous BIC but does something (much) better exist?

What to use as tinder in different parts of Europe

Here in Finland my first and second choices would be birch bark, third could be debated. But what is the standard in others parts? I actually have no idea as I have never had to light a fire anywhere else.

    Dawn redwood (Metasequoia)

Has anyone experience trying to grow this fossil? Got some seeds and very simple instructions and now looking for a bit more info.

    Gliding snowshoes

OK, tried them for the first time ever. Basically short wide skis (140 cm, 12cm) with non slip fur on part of the glide surface. Well they work, kind of, they do not glide nearly as well as skis but almost as handy as snow shoes in tight places, poles really required. In even half way open...

    Travel cloak

Read a few rather old stories slightly south of here (almost anything is), they often refer to "travel cloaks", apparently mid weight woolen large cloaks? Has anyone any experience or ideas if they actually were useful or just what existed at the time?

First snow and another strange Finn

So we had officially the first snow of this fall all 2cm of it. Also on one of the afternoon tabloids had a story about a Finn who after a divorce decided to live out in the woods. Or as it turned out, sleep in the woods, nine months from May 2 2019 he slept out in a hammock (not specified)...

It is that time of the year again

Geese are migrating, both Anser and Branta seen in various size flocks. Going West-Southwest mostly, which is slightly unusual, most years they go more South here.

    Mayday

So today and tomorrow is the semi officially approved Get-Drunk days. Traditionally cold and raining sleet so all the bush skills for surviving can be applied (if remembered), especially homing is a much appreciated skill set in university student circles. In my old Uni, HUT, Mayday started...

    Firesteel protection

Various Fe-Ce and related alloys tend to corrode fairly easily. Besides the obvious plastic bags or small water proof containers has anyone tried other protection methods, like light painting, rubber tube, shrink wrap etc. Did anything work?

    Chopping board

Out of what wood have your boards been? I am just thinking of making a few as both cottage and apartment have run out of them and Lady of the House is kind of destroying a lot of edges against various surfaces. The intention is to make both cutting and cutting/serving boards. The only local...

    Found long lost knives

Wifey finally found three folders that she put somewhere for "safe keeping" two years ago, one Sardinian, one Hungarian and one Sekely knife. They are more or less every day knives but also ones that I seldom carry. :D

    Some English

Is there an English word for the wood "chip" produced by a knife, axe or plane; we have a specific word for that "lastu". Like we have a word "kiehinen" meaning a feather stick or fuzz stick for starting a fire.

    New trekking belt

I need a very thin and breathable trouser belt (40mm) for trekking. Thin because other belts might be on top and breathable so that it would not cause too much sweating underneath also thin buckle or whatever is used for fastening it. So far I have not found anything even remotely like that...

    Is cicely root edible?

(Myrrhis odorata) Some sources say it is, just dug out a considerable amount of them as it tends to be a nuisance.

    Softwood vs. hardwood?

A question of language really, is there some logic how to define which wood belongs to what category or is it just custom?

How to tell quality of leather?

Are there practical ways of telling if the hide had been treated properly and if tanning and colouring went right? I am holding the piece in my hand.

    Snow

We have had about half a meter of snow in the last 48 hours. In some areas it is close to an abnormal situation but not quite generally so. Isolated houses might be temporary snowbound and as it is still snowing it might take several days before all roads are clear again. So far we have not...

    Favorite and good fire wood

I know the Finnish woods well so I have no trouble choosing fire wood. In the wild it is most often Scots pine, something else not so often. What would be your chosen species in the UK or in the Continent, a lot more species to choose from than here. At my cottage I think I burn birch mostly...

    Shaman drum

Drum, about 15 years old, made by a Sami. I kind of inherited it.
