    Artists conk char

Have just Carbonised some artists conk and gave it a go with my flint and steel. I would say it is on par with char cloth . Catches a spark great. It does not become brittle as other fungus do when carbonised. Chuffed to bits . Makes it all worth it when you find something new. :D Also...

I started using a basha as a young cadet through the mob and continue to use one now which I’m happy with but it’s dawned on me how little I actually know about tents. I’m starting to help out with D of E and other groups who use tents so I need to brush up big time. Any links would be super or...

    winter lashings

I have got my hands on some ash sticks about an inch or so thick and a couple of feet long. The plan is hopefully to make a string of crab/lobster pots up for the spring. I’ve got a few designs I want to try but my problem and reason for posting this thread is to do with lashing sticks...

    Freshwater mussels

So how safe are they to eat? Do they taste good? I see the odd bush crafty photo of people collecting them, but being filter feeders and all that it's put me off until now. I see all sorts of mussels when I’m out in the kayak. Oh and I’m not on about any protected species. :nono:

    Fyke nets

I'm in the process of trying to get a licence from the environment agency for Cray fish. It's not a 100% yet but I’ve got permission from the lake owner, which the environment agency suggested I do before applying for a licence with them. The pots (funnel trap) I use for prawns are fine for...

    Conger Skin.

Off for a fish in the next couple of days and the mark I fish will normally brings in a conger or two. Has anyone tanned conger skin before? I can’t find much on the net about this? I have read before that all animals have enough brains to tan their own skin but is this true for fish...

    Wild service tree

I spotted a wild service tree in the woods this summer, which I returned to today to find it loaded with berries. Bigger berries than I expected. The hard ones are quite bitter but the ones which are going soft are just heaven. So has anyone got any recipes for the berries? I’ve got some...

Have many of you been out mushroom picking in the last couple of days? Yesterday I went out for a couple of hours around a few good spots which I’ve found in the past and was surprised with the amount of mushrooms about. It’s been pretty lame until now around here... I found 17 species in...

    Twisted fire starter

Hello all Well I’m just wondering what type of wood or combinations of wood you all prefer when using a hand drill to make fire. The one I’ve had most success with is an Elder hearth and spindle. I’ve tried burdock without success and have some teasel to try. Any tips or hints would be...
