    We're buying a Narrowboat!

Long term residential moorings (that include sheds electric hookup and facilities) are contract based so a little more complicated to just leave behind but not too bad, and you can still do trips away from those mornings really easy. Some people don't have a mooring at all, you can stay up to...

    We're buying a Narrowboat!

Thanks everyone you're all so sweet!! My girlfriends actually renting a berth on a boat in Edinburgh now so I am spending a fair bit of time on water anyway - the stove has a fan and it's brilliant, but the stove is at one end of the boat and the bed at the other!! When we do ours the...

    We're buying a Narrowboat!

Ive been really inactive over the last few months so sorry about that, things have been busy and internet scarce!! In short, I met a woodsy girl who is studying a PhD in permaculture design, we fell in love and, with both of us always wanting to do some kind of off grid living, be it eco home...

Does anyone use work trousers for Bushcraft?

I use a different sort of work trousers - 100% wool office trousers!! As recconended in Kepharts Camping and Woodcraft. They work great for all but the hottest summer days but I want to sew canvas reinforcement on the knees at some point. AND they only cost me £7 in a charity shop!

Advice needed; Cooking pot set for newbie?

I started out with a three piece nesting aluminium pot set, but only took the two smaller ones with me. The lids doubled as frying pans. I'd recommend starting out cheap and generic so you can work out what sort of stuff suits you and what sort of cooking you want to do. I have since got really...

    DIY canvas bivvy?

Began work on the bivvy today, top and bottom panels are cut and I'll start sewing them today This photos shows the panels folded to the rough size of the final thing. And here is the sheet of PU nylon that will cover the bottom of the bag. This is a prototype really so I'm not worrying...

    Permanent outdoor camp at home!

I'll give the baker tent a try though i'm not sure how it'll work with the raised camp bed space wise, we'll see! I'm not currently in Scotland but am at my parents house in Dorset. Though personally I think the 'it always rains in Scotland' thing to be a myth. It is true that scotland is...

Making ferro rods - help needed

I would go some size drill bit, and give the rod a good whack in. If it is still too tight for the rod you can always give the drill bit a bit of a wiggle in the hole, file/sand down the end of the rod ever so slightly or give the inside of the hole a good sanding. basically once there is a hole...

    Permanent outdoor camp at home!

Thanks for the advice! As I'm only 50m from the house i can take stuff in to dry if it gets wet which is nice. The tarp has a fair bit of overhang and the pictures make it look more open than it is but I'll see how it does in the rain and make some small walls at the open head and feet sides for...

    Permanent outdoor camp at home!

Thanks everyone for your kind words! My parents house is exactly the same, edwardian with a dog and coal and wood fires. I get it worst with cats. My friend has two and I cant stay at hers for more than half an hour without looking like I'm in the middle of a monster cold and needing an...

    Wild Camping "Full Time" Possible?

From what I've seen similar threads, the common conclusion is usually that you can forage, or you can cover distance. You cant really do both. I do a lot of winter hiking and I usually cover an average of about 5 miles a day, because of the heavier pack needed for winter equipment, having to...

    Permanent outdoor camp at home!

I'm back home from uni for the summer but because I am really allergic to my parents house (it makes me very asthmatic from pets and dust) I have decided to spend the summer under my 3x3 tarp in the garden - mostly to see if i'm able to do permanent outdoor living!! I'll still be using the...

Overnighter with a novice in the cold Scottish woods.

I think that is probably what I was experiencing. For winter I have loose fleece booties and I think because they are loose they work much better. Allans865 it is probably my favourite little chunk of the UK! Definitely worth the visit.

    Backpack suggestions

I personally swear by external frame packs. Even smaller ones. Depends on the users build but as a skinnyish girl I find them the best fit. I hate that on most modern packs the waist belt sits on the hips rather than above, so can never support any decent weight. On external frames the belt is...

    Bushy folk music

sorry for the double post but I thought of a few more... To be honest I associate most Old Time (pre bluegrass american fiddle and banjo music) with bushcraft, just because it was born in the Appalachians of people who lived in cabins, to whom wilderness skills were a daily necessity. I really...

    Bushy folk music

Nice recipe for a camp meal? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGCiHu9rFOQ I've been known to play a little banjo out in the woods, always good to find bushcrafty tunes/songs (also great for terrifying those over on the Songs of the Paddle forum)
