Ok normally I don't get involved in any of this stuff but apparently there is a pole going on on the TOP TEN SURVIVAL EXPERTS. I stopped by to vote and noticed Ray Mears is 4th and Mors Kochanski is in 12th place you have to be kidding me RIGHT????
So it is time to get some voters in gear and...

This wood is stabilized but not with Methyl. I would like to thank Paul Savage a fellow knife maker who showed me this method of dying the handles. Paul in the true essence of a great knife maker shares many tips with others.
Hope this helps
I have wanted to learn to get this effect form my handle for years so I saw another makers work and they were nice enough to share the method with me and I thought in the spirit of pasing along information I would make a post about it. Anyway you will need a few items and I will mention a couple...
Tandy Leather usually sells beginner set. But as I mentioned in my first post an old leather weight lifting belt is a good source for leather if you can get into a store they have scrap boxes and they often have large pieces in those. If you take a look around sometimes the very supplies you...
Adding a firesteel is easy like a previouse poster said you need to add a spacer what I do is take the exact same thickness of leather that I use for the space and use it to form my firesteel loop. I leave a gap in my spacer just a bit narrower than the width of the material for the loop. I glue...
Here is another in everycase the measuring is important even in the diffrent shaped sheath what you need to get down is the space for the handle so it is snug abd enough space to allow for the blade and a spacer.
So to start with I would say the biggest tip to save money and not waste...
Sheath making is a skill just like any other it will take time to get to a good finished product and most likely after you arrive at a level you are happy with you will think I should have paid the 35 pounds isnce you will spend that much learning it...lol
Anyway after having said that first...

Sounds like you might have gotten some truck stuff try looking for small cars the smallest I have found and really I use the terms found for I was lucky to get it was golf cart leaf spring it fell just under the 1/4 inch mark.
LLeaf spring is a fine material itis usually made of 5160 the only draw back is the stuff is hard too find in a small thickness. It uswually comes around the 1/4 inch mark.

The thread o if you carry a knife or not got me thinking.
As far as an EDC goes for those of you that carry them what is your most scommon use.
I wish I had the ability to put up a poll here but I guess post responces will have to do.
for example I work in a factory so I use mine alot...
The other thing i like to do is take the prototype and run around my back yard swinging it over my head yelling. It give me a good feel for what the neighbors will put up with.

I can only tell you what I tend to do with a design and hopefully it helps. I take a coy of my drawing and spray adhesive it to a piece of 1/4 partical board cut it out and shape it. After that I tend to play with it a bit keeping in mind how the various properties will change when it is made...
