Lightweight bivvy bags for use under a tarp

i've had good experience with the snugpak special forces bivy. Especially under the tarp, the zip on the bivvy makes it's use (getting in/out, venting, etc) notably easier. Haven't had a problem yet with the zip either. Something that the other bivvys don't have.

I'm also in favour of Alpkit gear

    Rope storage and carry

-> Go to any climbing hall and ask one of the lads or lasses to show you. Will take 5min. -> Ask for someone who does alpine climbing (and not just plastic walls), and he/she'll show you how to properly do it such that you can make it into a backpack-like package. It's really just a few slings...

    what bivi?

Personal recommendation: Snugpak - SF bivvi (haven't had any condensation in it yet; - alpkit tarp on top. thus, you can sit underneath and have shelter when it rains/snows, even if you don't want to sleep yet (which you can hardly do when in a those tunnel bivvis)

    Fatwood fail.

As said above, go for the joint of a branch with the trunk on a needle-tree. Worked fine for me so far. I usually go for any trees that have been blown over. Alternatively, on those that have been harvested, sometimes the branches are left and you can, again, look for the section that would...

Attaching a trophy to the wooden bit.

I (and basically everyone I know) drills small holes on the inside of the skull, little holes through the board, and then use wire to lash the skull towards the board.

What to wear in your sleeping bag

While I'd agree with some that say that clothing does help, and it shouldn't matter whether it's 'on you' or 'on top of you' (meaning, on the sleeping bag), there are two aspects that one ought to be aware of (and are partially hidden by a single word in the statements of some of the above): -...

What to wear in your sleeping bag

Actually ... have a look here at winter woodland camping, including a good video: http://paulkirtley.co.uk/2016/winter-woodland-wildcamping-tips/

What to wear in your sleeping bag

Have a look at the most recent 'Ask Paul Kirtley' Podcast. He briefly talks about 'what to wear in your sleeping bag'. Bottom line is: Maybe one layer of underwear (long shirt, long undertrousers, socks) ... but the rest of the insulation ought to be coming from the sleeping bag. I think he at...

    Ultra Clothing: Dachstein Alpine Jumper...

Was using that pullover during my military service ... used it down to -20 degC. It's effective and lasting. However the volume it requires, and it's weight, are something of a different era. The main reason we took it along was because the old Austrian army backpack (KAT3, the one you had to...

    Article: Burning the right wood

Based on scandinavian research, the content of energy per kg of wood is identical, pretty much regardless of the kind of wood (with the exception from birch bark and birch twigs). It's the density between different kinds of woods that do differ. For those interested, feel free to read in more...

    Greasy skull

Get hydrogen peroxide at a pharmacy. If they ask, tell them that you intend to bleach deer bones. Should be fine to get some then. For that bone, I'd recommend you to get a brush and simply brush the bone with the peroxide. Oh. And you'll need sunlight or something with UV. Notably helps the...

    Backpack advice

Another recommendation for the Alpkit Gourdon. Using a 30l here for about half a year now ... happy with it. Light and sturdy (so far).

    Backpack field repair

Did it during a trip to the states. Part of the stitching of the shoulder strap ... stich a lot and it should hold again. Afterwards I went to a local shoemaker to have it properly stitched.

    Hooped Bivy Help

I'm obliged to support Lord Poncho and provide the requested statement: So far, I haven't had issues with the Snugpak bivi (the pure bivi, not the stratosphere) concerning condensation. However, I would like to add that I do not breath into it, which likely makes up more than 90% of the humidity...

    Water Bag Carrier

I'm using an Ortlieb 5l bag and am very happy with it. Folds up easily into a 10cm billy can, leaving most of the space at the bottom free for other components.
