Cleaning rusty steel parts fitted to Cast aluminium pans?

Absolute best way to remove rust imo is with those little wire brushes you can get for use in power drills in an air die grinder. Bought one to do the shock towers on my car because I already have my compressor, and the new tool novelty - and accompanying infectious grin - hasn't quite yet worn off

    Bamboo

I have always wanted to make a bamboo bike frame.. but have found the cost of buying resin for carbon fibre prohibitive...

Bargain material find - can I use it for hammock?

Might you have problems with breathability in that it's PU coated??

    Old sewing machines (pic heavy)

The thing that did make me wonder whether it was a capacitor or not was the fact that IIRC there were three or four leads coming out of it, so I couldn't be sure whether it was a capacitor or something else entirely. Never seen a cap with more than two terminals before.....

    Old sewing machines (pic heavy)

In an exploding footpedal is the capacitor often the culprit? I have a Jones Model 365 foreign that blew up under my foot a fair while ago that I'd love to get working again. I seem to remember that when afterwards I took the foot pedal apart what appeared to have let the magic smoke out was a...

Drill powered lathe.. need help designing one!

Haha I'll second that. Just watched it and this thread was the first thing I thought of. Absolutely love his work.

    Powered saw options.

Something that would spring to mind would be a handheld bandsaw, although I understand that they are often more expensive than a normal bandsaw.

    Thread for leatherworking

The stuff I believe that you're looking for is waxed linen thread. Comes in a wide array of colours and is very strong. You can also buy just normal linen thread and wax it yourself with most any wax, although beeswax would be my wax of choice. Use saddle stitch for extra strength too.

    DIY hammock stand.

If you lean the uprights out at the top as opposed to having them go vertically upwards, the hammock will be able to support more weight, as more of the force will be expressed as compression rather than shear force, and dimensional lumber is far stronger longitudinally than cross-sectionally.

    Your picture of the day...

Late evening photograph from the garden, I was amazed at how much light there was to be captured on a 10 second exposure, despite the fact that it was pitch black to the eye.

    Simple homemade woodcarving knife

In all honesty, if you could cut it with a hacksaw, there probably was no temper to worry about ruining.

R&D pocket stove / multi fuel candle?

Are you making these on a CNC lathe or a manual lathe? I'd love to have a go at something similar on the Bantam we have at school once I go back.

    My weekend's work

I thought I'd share the fruit of my labour this weekend just passed. The knife has a ~55mm cutting edge, is made from an old Sheffield file and is a friction folder. The pivot and stop pins are 1/8" Brass Rod peened over into small counterbores and the lanyard hole is 1/4" Stainless...

    Circular saw blades

It was John Heisz that made the sharpener ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHkTijUHtmU ). He's done some amazing stuff.

    Sewing Round-Bottomed Stuff-Sacs

In making stuffsacks for both my DIY hammock and hobo stove kit from rip-stop, I came across no problems by having carefully calculated exactly how much material was needed for the side walls using 2πr. If you make that calculation and then add seam allowance I find it all comes together...

    New to the moot

I'll be 15 on Monday, and I very much appreciate the dangers of knives, as should anyone who uses them at all. I must admit that I do have a scar on my right index that was gained by a momentary lapse of sanity whilst attempting to bore a hole in a piece of wood with a folder. How naive we are...

    New to the moot

Another question, does anything of note happen on the Friday (24th), or is it more of an arrive/set up kind of affair?

    New to the moot

This year will be my first time having persuaded the family to attend the moot, and as is to be expected, I am very, very excited :p The five of us will be going, i.e. my parents, two younger siblings (11 & 8) and myself. Any advice that anyone may have would be very much appreciated, as...
