    cooking pot suspension methods compared

Thanks for sharing Marc. There is something very iconic about a billy hanging over the fire. I usually use the double forked stick with a bar method although am well impressed with 'yer ol friend the Aussie cooking crane, going to have to try that on my next cookout. Cheers, T

Can I boil water in a coffee can?

Rhyan, take a squizz at this excellent youtube by Dirt time, for some good, old school tin can hobo tech. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pNxz7sQMnw Have used cans for boiling and baking many times, even had my Cubs troop do it in the summer - no ill effects!

    The Whelen shelter

First saw one of these on pinterest last year and have wanted to have a go at making one since. I much prefer a tarp to a tent but have found that using one in 'lean to' mode leads to spark burns in my nylon DD tarps. Last week I put this set up together using the base of an abandoned 4 person...

Do You Know What This Is? Bit fun for a Sunday afternoon

Yes, a pal of mine who is ex RAF has the knife you describe. It was for cutting straps, harness etc in event of bailout. The handle on this one is pretty much identical.

Do You Know What This Is? Bit fun for a Sunday afternoon

I think it might be an aircrew survival knife of 1950's era. Later ones had metal sheath. Do I win £5.00?

Shrak - middle eastern campfire bread

This is my first go at making Shrak, a middle eastern flatbread which is traditionally cooked on a 'saj' - but it seems an upturned wok works just as well! The dough is plain flour, salt, dry yeast and water and it needs to be worked like a pizza base to get it as big and thin as it'll go. It...

    The Hobo breakfast

Thanks for watching and for your kind words folks. Wish I could claim to have discovered this one myself. I got the idea from an American book called 'Cooking on Stick'. It contains a lot of foil packet recipes and Hobo cooking techniques as well as various outdoor games and activities...

    The Hobo breakfast

Bacon and eggs cooked on skewers, bread cooked on a split log and coffee made in an old soup can. No pans, no skillets, no stove. Worked a treat! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmLJSE7cDRs

    What is this???

If it was mine, and because its such a classic example of 'the wrong knife', I'd take it along on my next trip and see what it could really do when measured against a knife designed for the woods. I've never used anything like this. Might even make an interesting thread: Using your most ill...

    Army mess tent

Just been gifted a 24 x 18 army mess tent alas, without the frame.:( It appears to be either new or in very good shape and although the bag is very battered the grommets are all coated in the same proofing material as the fabric suggesting no use. Does anyone know if its possible to get a frame...

    3 new ones

Hmmm... Think bottom one is my favourite, just really like the way it has a sort of 'fawn's foot' which seems to balance the upward curve toward the point. Really smart pieces all three, Thanks for sharing mate, T

    01 steel sharpening question

Many thanks for the advice guys, got plenty to try now. I like the idea of 'normalising' going to try that next time Draven, thankyou. Was told 01 is very forgiving so am hoping its a sharpening error - I'll keep the elbows in next time Robson.

    The under £30 micro forge

Looks good Mick. Like the idea of the footpump - easier than holding the haidrier in other hand I'm guessing! Btw, what is Golden Hen?
