    New Axe Sheath

Hi, After my beloved axe saw some axe sheath photos on this site (mostly Singteks ;) ) it ran away in shame to hide its functional yet quite tame sheath. After calming it down, I promised to make it a new one, and here it is! (btw - I'm not mad, and I don't actually talk to my axe...:o )...

    Firesteel + Birchbark Tutorial

Hi Guys, I was out photographing this process for the Scouts, and thought that I may as well post it here too, hopefully it will be of use/interest. Rarely have I been anywhere in the UK where there isn't a silver birch close to hand. Couple this with carrying a few grams of firesteel...

    Latest 'Birthday' Bushy!

Kieran725 asked me 7 weeks ago if I could make this knife for someone's birthday. I've worked round the clock on this one (whilst trying to do 'real' work at the same time!) and got it finished with a day to spare. The 'A' on the sheath is the initial of the new owner :)...

    Help with a bowdrill survey?

Hi guys, Spent a happy Saturday to day doing a few bits of bushcraft (as you do), and decide to test out a few different timbers I had collected after one of those giant storms a few weeks back blew all the trees down. I thought what might be handy would be a table of the qualities of each...

Birch Sap - why is it yellow??

I tapped my first ever tree today at about 4pm and have just been back to look. My container has filled up dramatically, but the bottom third of the liquid is a yellowy colour whereas the top two thirds are clear. I assume some sort of settling has taken place here, maybe of sugar or something...

where has the edit button gone?

Am I just being really dumb, or has the edit button disappeared? Perhaps this is something to do with the site updates, bbut I have the silly habit of only spell-checking after I submit my response, and the edit button was missing to change something. Not a big problem, just...

    Zebrano Bushcrafter

Hi guys, Just the first knife of what will probably be 5 in total, 2 have already been snapped up before their made! I get to keep this one though :) . I have been experimenting with rounding the spine on some tools I made for carving, but decided to leave this one square due to the range...

Waterstones - which ones to get??

Hi guys, I have been sharpening stuff (chisels, knives, plane blades) on oil stones and more recently my £5 sharpening kit, and can get them v.sharp. However as my oilstones are ancient, they are starting to become less level than they should be, so I thought its time I bought some...

    Help with making baskets

Hi guys, Was inspired by Wednesday's edition of Ray Mear's Wild Food (episode 5) and amongst other things I decided that its time to learn how to do some basketry. I went into the woods today and collected a large amount of raffia-like dead grass that was growing in huge quantities (an entire...

Bowdrill: Fire By Friction Tutorial/Tips (pic heavy)

Hi there, I spent a great morning practicing fire by friction and I have since decided to put this together in order to help those of us who are wanting to learn or are still trying. Although the winter isn't the normal time for people to learn this skill, with perseverance, its still doable...

    Bow making - guidance please

Hi guys, As its 2007 I thought I would have a crack at making something entirely new to me, a bow. Although I have used wood (both in bushcraft and woodworking sense) quite a lot, I have never attempted a bow. I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance as where to begin... :)...

    Finally! Christmas Presents now finished...

Even though I started in October on some of the knives, it has still taken until today to get everything finished. So much for having a rest over the Christmas period, I have been beavering away for ages now. Below is a photo of all the stuff that hasn't been wrapped. There's three knives...

    recipe for finishing wax

hi there, I was wondering if anyone had a recipe for making the beeswax/carnauba finishing compound for wood (knife handles etc) that is often talked about. I have both beeswax (hard) and carnauba (the yoghurt like consistency stuff that leprevo sells), so any help would be appreciated. :)...

    Willow bark cordage

Hi there, Just wanted to ask you guuys a few questions about willow bark cordage. I am OK on producing nettle cordage but seeing as there are a few willow trees near me I thought I would give it a go. So... Does it matter what type of willow it is? Near me I have pussy willow and weeping willow...

    Recipe Ideas...

'Evening all, After doing a quick 5 minute review of where I am, bushcraftwise, I realised that my main weakness is that my wilderness/bushcraft/backwoods cooking skills are distinctly lacking. The things I have managed are trout (standard ray mears stuck between a stick on wood skewers style)...

    woodwalker's curvy spoon tutorial

hmmm... time for another epic post... As there has been a noted increase in the amount of spoon related posts recently, I thought a spoon tutorial could be in need. For total carving beginners, there is an excellent tutorial here: spoon tutorial in the articles section of the...

The UK's First Bushcraft Magazine: Which one is it?

At the recent wildeness gathering I picked up a leaflet about a Bushcraft Magazine. On their website and the front cover of their magazine (shown on the slideshow on their homepage) it states that they are the Uk's first Bushcraft Mag. However on BCUK's homepage at the bottom, its mag says its...

    plant pot oven

A few weeks ago, after being inspired by pictures of beautiful bannocks, I had a go myself. I succeeded not only to waste some perfectly good dough, but also depositing a big lump of carbon on my billy can lid - not good! The problem was that the food, in direct contact with the pan only...

    Fire by Friction - Hurray!

At long last, success! After some intensive practice for the past month (half an hour here, half and there) I finally got two embers in a row which were transfered to cramp balls. I now look like this :D :D :D ! A few tips I have come by via trial/ error for anyopne still trying are: 1)...
