Christmas to New Year chill out

Col, how'd the walk go? Tried to text Jason but no joy, haven't been on forum for ages but was wondering what happened to you. Would love to get up but will have to see. Went to Lomond one summer but think it would be even better in winter with no midges or tourists.

    Wood carving tool question.

Not always, often with chisels the steel is harder on the sharp side. Besides why bother? There are loads of lovely old chisels, gouges ect.

    Another saw, Disston this time.

Another saw I have done up. Had peeling varnish and covered in rust but cleaned up well I think. 1O TPI cutting well after a sharpen up. Small repair to broken horn but done well by previous owner. Pictures to have a nose through. http://www.flickr.com/photos/80226784@N07/8614749412/...

    Kent pattern conversion

I liked it better before. Looked like a fine working Kent axe to me. What is it about these people feel the need to change? I use mine for carving or scribing skirting boards all the time, really good as it is.

    Saw smarteing.

What I mean't in my last post was that I don't think it is impractical to use soft points everyday. Takes maybe 20mins to sharpen them, doesn't need doing very often. Whereas a new hard point is a tenner, and more plastic rubbish to add to the heap. I do and get along fine. Not these old saws...

    Saw smarteing.

Disposable saws and lack of skill/time to sharpen them. I use my soft point Spear and Jacksons nearly every day and only need to sharpen maybe every 3 months, takes 15-20 mins. Less for my rip saw. If I used hard points there would be dozens by the time I reach retirement age. Isn't there enough...

    Stainless filleting knifes.

Morning all. Snowed in and thinking of making some filleting/bait knives for my friends. I want to make them quickly, all the same and from materials which will stand up to use in a saltwater environment. So stainless and some kind of plastic. Blades, would like to do full tang blades from...

New Shotguns (well new to me)

That four ten looks a bit like a rook rifle. A lot were bored out so their owners could keep them on shotgun licenses. Yep 3/4 is good going.

    Antique KUKRI blade Advice

Not ideal but there you go. Two options Make a handle and drill some holes so you can just force the tang into the handle and then drill a hole or holes through the handle and tang for a rivet or two. Probably hard metal so carbide bits, slowly and plenty of oil. Or you could grind the...

Lots of skillfully made stuff. Especially like antler needles and Sami knife. Ok here's a knife I made a while ago. Old file, a bit of walnut from a broken chair leg and some brass rod. Here you go. http://www.flickr.com/photos/80226784@N07/8132054635/...
