    Shelter

Bivvy-bag, tarp, hammock - all your options covered, and weigh less than most tents. In the absence of trees to hang from, a decent-sized tarp can be rigged to create a tent-like shelter. DD make decent tarps and hammocks at good prices; buy from their ebay store as they have discounted gear...

    Rugged smartphone - fortisX

Slow, and likely to have terrible battery-life. I think Samsung do a ruggedised GPS feature-phone for around £80, which will be a simpler, better bet.

    smallest bivi bag to pack

Alpkit Hunka. Compact, breathable, and £30. You'd have to spend over twice that for a comparable Rab one. I love my Hunka.

    Paracord bracelet opinions please.

Always. Never had recourse to use them in the years I've worn them; but I hate making cordage enough to warrant wearing 30' in a double-looped 550 para cord bracelet. You could waste a day making a usable length of (weak) cord out of found materials.

Holly. Or buy him a Milbro.

What weight do you carry when you go hiking?

It's not difficult to pack light, especially for hiking trips. If you plan around water sources and have a good filter bottle, you can reduce a fair bit of weight by not having to carry a few litres at a time. I stay under 20lbs fully-loaded with food and water for 3 days/2 nights of hiking...

    Victorinox Mauser Knife

I have fond memories of one I lost over 20 years ago. It had a removable guard for the (excellent) saw-blade. Nice knife.

    pocket knives what to buy

I'm a recent convert to Spydercos, having used many, many knives. Photos do Spydercos no justice. Once in the hand, and cutting, you'll understand why they're great. Their budget line of knives are excellent, and if you're looking for inexpensive and street-legal, the Byrd Tern's not shabby...

    Evernew Ti Alcohol Stove. Remarkable.

Evernew Ti Alcohol Stove: Much as I loved my Trangia, I find it hard to beat this for efficiency. Weighing in at 34g, and blooming in under 10 seconds, this little stove just does the business. Not only that, it’ll heat a small pot placed directly onto it, thanks to the way the jet-holes are...

    upcoming adventures any body?

I converted to ultralight some time ago, so any gear I need for the 100k will fit in a large waist-pack and not weigh more than a couple of pounds... My titanium mug fits around the base of my bottle, and I'll probably use the tiny, folding titanium Esbit stove for making a cuppa...

    What did you buy today?

Sale at Cotswold Outdoors, £100 off Mountain Equipment Xero 250: Super fluffy, with 750+ fill Hungarian goose down. Covered in Mountain Equipment’s Helium fabric on the outside, and EXL top-lining. It’s slightly elastic on the inside, so it hugs whilst trapping dead-air nicely...

    upcoming adventures any body?

Dartmoor in a week and a bit, then the trailwalker 100k, punctuated with weekends in our local hills with my youngest (7), bivvying. Probably do a few nights in the South of France this summer, family permitting... Would be nice to go somewhere in Wales this autumn.

    Looking for Bushcraft Boots

'Bushcraft Boots?' sounds like the marketing folk at Bison have been watching too much telly. You could do worse than look at Chippewa logger's boots, or telegraph engineer's boots. I hear that they're comfy and lifetime-serviceable: and they're tall boots. You'll probably have to order from...

    ultra lighters

Here's my rations for 3 days & 2 nights in winter. It's inexpensive, compact, and fun to plan: Lots of calories in sugars, fats, proteins and carbs. I mix my own food in ‘soup & sauce’ bags, so I can put boiling water directly into the bags, seal them up, and leave them for 10...

    light,lighter. lightest-right righter rightest

Here's my pick & mix for a few days and nights in Feb on Dartmoor: I reckon I can trim it by not carrying as much water, and processing what I can get from streams. 22lbs all-in with water and rations, isn’t shabby, but I reckon I could do better. I think this selection won't compromise...
