Definitely what Martin says! You'll be surprised at what doesn't get used and what uses you can get out of things you wouldn't normally use them for (carefully!). See what you can get done with the stuff you don't use with the stuff you do use and see if there's any overlap. Hope that makes...

Good idea, but a bit pricey (though I'm sure I could find a hundred uses for the leftovers!). Methinks more 'what have I got lying about' type searching before I spend more money on kit (BAD ADDICTION - SHINY KIT SYNDROME!!!!) ;)
No, not waterproof - I tested 'em - but there must be some kinda rectangular 'o' ring/gasket out there...I might have a go at making a couple if I can find rubber thick enough.
