    Selecting an axe (picture heavy)

Hi, this looks like a great thread but all of the images in the original post have gone walkabout (or is it just me?...say it's not just me...), I don't suppose you still have them and could re-post do you @British Red ?

    Ventile Fabric

I believe you can get it straight from the horses mouth at http://www.ventile.co.uk/, but there may be a minimum I guess. Alternatively from Pennine Outdoor but they only have it in 'earth' (light brown to you and me) and it's £25 a meter

    Scouts and knives

I organised a bulk purchase of clippers for our Explorers, sent home a letter for the parents to sign explaining why we thought they were good knives and said we wouldn't let them have them until they'd done some training. We also gave the parents the option of us giving the knife directly to...

Where'd you go on summer camp then?

Hi, We went to Tolmers this year with our Explorers - a very nice site in near Potters Bar. The site is pretty well equipped with archery, air rifles (including a 'tin can alley' which was very good!), a couple of climbing/abseiling walls, including a rotating one, boating/rafting pond &...

    Karrimor K-SB boot woes

On the subject of Gore-Tex getting sweaty, the Meindl site FAQ says not to wear cotton socks - I guess they soak the sweat up instead of releasing it? Black.Sheep, the reason I went for the Meindl's was the wide fitting, so maybe try them.

    Karrimor K-SB boot woes

I tried the Berghaus ones in the shop, but they didn't fit - too tight across the ball of my foot - the Meindl's have more space inside. Oh well, thanks for all the thoughts guys, I'll give 'em a go and see how they do in the winter!

    Karrimor K-SB boot woes

Phew! Was starting to get worried about my new purchase - anyone else want to stick their 2p in?? I've got the fabic ones ('Magic' I think they're called!), so hopefully a bit more breathable than leather.

    Karrimor K-SB boot woes

Hi all, Just got back from a very wet week on Explorer Scout camp and thought I should report on the problems I had with my boots. I bought a pair of K-SB's last September (e-Vent waterproof lining fabric boots) for milling about and camping in. They've seen fairly light use, nothing...

    advice on machetes

My mate's got one of these - they're pretty good, very heavy duty (possibly a bit heavy for an old, weak, female?:p ), I'm thinking of getting one myself. I've used this seller before as well and had no problems. The other type I've seen is longer with a kind of bulbus end if you see what I...

I don't get directed back after posting

I'm on IE6, yes, and it still happens.

Please handle my Lapplander 90 blade (pic)

Which blades? The Lapplanders? Although I've got nothing to compare against, I'd say it's a pretty nice blade, fairly bog-standard, but nicely finished (in a polished mas-produced kind of way), but with a slightly odd handle shape. I chose to make the handle bigger on mine and re-shape it...

    do you use chisels?

I've got a small set of craft chisels that I use for decorating stuff (spoons etc.), similar to these but only about 6 of them! Wouldn't like to do anything heavy duty, but for decorative work they are fine.

How to make the spine of a Clipper good for striking?

I think the idea is to file it flat so that there are sharp right angles between the spine and the side of the blade. On my Frosts Mora the edges are slightly rounded where they have been pressed out of the machine (or however they are mass-produced).

    Fun wi' antler.

Top class work there Cap'n, your shipmate must be climbing the riggin' with glee!:beerchug:

Please handle my Lapplander 90 blade (pic)

Go on - give it a go yourself - here's mine, using the slightly longer 115 blade. I complicated the issue by making the handle bigger than the tang, but if you're happy with the standard size then it would be considerably easier.

    compressed sawdust charcoal

I think you'll find that's for Christchurch in New Zealand, not the UK.....:p

    Frosts clipper blade shortening

There's not enough in it to make any difference I would say.
