    Sycamore Longbow

Dug up an old thread here but did you finish the bow, Woodwildling?. I'm interested if Sycamore will make a bow, it grows like a weed round here, (that and lots of mature beech) and I'm spoilt for choice with 2-3" and thicker saplings. Thanks Andy

    Dyeing Canvas

I think It will dye, i recall Topknot Dyeing a cotton canvas dustsheet with 500 teabagsto make a tarp, gave it a nice tan colour. I'd imagine using a commercail dye like those by Dylon would work too , though depending on the tightnes of the weave the results may be uneven. But never...

Ash - any suggestions for what to do with it?

Its possible to make a bow from shorter pieces by splicing them in the centre where the handle will be with a Z or W splice and epoxy or other strong glue, hide glue will work fine but is not waterproof if you wanta a bushy style glue, then just treat it asa single piece of wood though avoid bow...

Scythian / Mongolian / Hungarian bows

I shoot a samick SKB, its a modern interpretaion of the traditional korean bow, The korean bow was the pinnacle of composite bow development primarily for target use, they were unstable and frgile and had to be handled carefully but the ranges started at around 160 yards IIRC. The SKB is a...

Heh I'm a bot more of a fussy perfectionist I'm afraid, i really shouldnt let small screw ups bother me but they do, but I'm gonna try my masking tape idea. Got any pics of the finished pack Barn Owl? Incidentaly I found out naptha is used in shoe polish (60 -70% ) so i dont think it will...

I 've recently bought a canvas and leather norwegian rucksack, OG canvas with white leather straps. I want to dye the straps brown and I'm looking for ideas how to stop the canvas getting dyed at the same time. I'm thinking masking tape with electrical tape over the top or similar for a...

    Dyeing Webbing??

I've a feeling that modern military webbing is Nylon, Polyester or polyproplene so ordnianry commercial dyes probably wont work. Paint might, infact i'm sure www.usmcpro.com have a range of paints (search for weapons paint) designed for weapons can be applied to webbing too but will be...

    Nettle string?

Boiled used to mean just that but these days it contains chemical agents to speed up drying and make it more varnish like, which is why boiled linseed oil is a nono on spoons, Kuksas, etc. I'd try unboiled or raw linseed oil as the drying may stiffen the line. Andy
