I wouldn't bother with anything other than a Tramontina. Cheap and need a decent sheath (and sharpen) but they are great. Standard issue for clearing bramble etc where I work.

I'd still go with the Kubben (despite the high price point) for the work described. Great all rounder and packs a punch for its size and weight plus its compact enough to stash in a small bag. IIRC its the same head as the wildlife hatchet too? The great thing about GB is there's nothing to do...
Those are way better than my first efforts. I tend to carve them out with the bowl facing up towards where the bark was so you get the rings in the bowl. Opposite to what your first one looks like.
I'd had my SFA for one day and managed to almost cut the top corner of my thumb off, through the nail and that, chopping a few sticks. It's a lovely axe but I remember the awful feeling every time I pick it up:sick:
