    really big old trees

The Fortingall Yew being another that could tell a tale or two. Estimated at 2 - 5,000 yrs and the oldest living tree (thing?) in Europe. Legend has it that Pontious Pilot played under it as a child! The dates and the Roman occupation of the area fit but it sounds too convenient. It does put...

    map scale

Not sure what he meant. The standard Explorer scale of 1:25 000 is 2½ inches to 1 mile. The alternative Landranger is 1:50 000 scale or 1¼ inches to 1 mile. Perhaps he was refering to the original 1 inch series which was 1" to 1ml but that would give less detail than your Explorer. ?

    Bathtub ground sheet for bashering?

You would need to get some tension on it. some short but stout pegs outside the corners with bungie loops might work. Are you going for floatation or a dam? ;)

    Bathtub ground sheet for bashering?

All very true but I was realy considering the potential advantages of a bathtub over a flat groundsheet, not over a tent, hammock or bivvi. I just don't personaly see any advantage with a bathtub groundsheet that would help enough to make one worthwhile. Even with some sort of support at the...

    dry food suggestion

I used to think I was being so weight conscious using as much dried food as possible. Then the penny dropped that I had to rehydrate the stuff with exactly the same amount and weight of water as had been removed. Still use it quite a lot but don't feel quite so clever about it as the...

most useless kit ever seen on the market

Toddy is closest with a bread steamer but I like the bridge idea too. Meant to be a camping toaster but all it actually achieves is to turn fresh bread into stale bread in about 10 mins. They must have sold thousands of them over the years. btw... Anyone wanting a toaster to use on a...

most useless kit ever seen on the market

Not only the most useless piece of kit but has to rank among the longest running:- I remember my parents buying one back in the early 60s and they are still making, and apparently selling them!

    Bathtub ground sheet for bashering?

I think I would tend to concentrate on pitch selection rather than building a boat. ;) My own experience of bathtubs is not very good. If they are perfectly waterproof they hold any water that does inevitably get in, wind blown, on clothes and gear, spills etc. However, they usually...

    Bathtub ground sheet for bashering?

Please let us know how you get on sticking that stuff tombear. I have yet to find anything that will stick the usual groundsheet material properly. Best so far is some industrial strength double sided tape but it's not perfect. btw... why a bathtub under a tarp?

    What size is your pack?

My old, heavy and massive Karrimore has been retired. I now mainly use a 30Ltr Alpkit Stealthy Gourdon. Light, 100% waterproof and, well, stealthy. :) If it doesn't fit in, it doesn't go. I use it for backpacking/wildcamping and cycle touring/wildcamping strapped on top of rack and...

    Lighter binoculars

Great idea. excellent weight and size saving with the added durability of simpler build. I had dismissed monoculars a long time ago and had not reconsidered them since. But I wasn't so weight conscious then. The one you linked looks good and I will investigate further. I can't believe I...

The load out- a guide and example (pic heavy)

Always interesting to see other peoples kit Will, thanks. You seem to be well set up. What weight do you reckon? How about the "extras"... spare batteries, repair kit, phone, maps, wet weather gear...etc...etc I seem to be able to get my basic kit weight down ok but blow it by the time...

    Lighter binoculars

I am making efforts to reduce my pack weight and am currently thinking of changing my binoculars. I always take them when I go out and would feel half blinded if I didn't have any with me. I initially took them for bird/wildlife watching but have found them an indispensable aid for path...

    Sleeping bag compression sac

Wow... I am surprised that you split a Snugpak compression sack. Perhaps they vary across the range. Is it like this?:- http://shop.packyourbags.com/acatalog/SNUGPAK_COMPRESSION_BAGS.html The one that came with my Softie Elite 3 could compress concrete. It's heavy and bulky though so I...
